Rollo Manning has 40 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry
across all facets of its operation.
He
worked in sales and marketing in the manufacturing sector (Glaxo
Australia); public relations in pharmacy administration (with the
Pharmacy Guild of Australia in Canberra) and owned a community pharmacy
in Queanbeyan (NSW) for eight years before moving to Darwin in 1996.
He took up a
position as "Rural Pharmacist" in the Katherine Region
responsible for supplying pharmaceuticals to 23 remote Aboriginal
health clinics before being transferred to Darwin where he took
on the position of Senior Pharmacy Policy Officer for Territory
Health Services (THS) from May 1998 to February 2001. In that position
he was the NT representative on the National Drug and Poisons Scheduling
Committee, the Therapeutic Goods Coordinating Committee and the
Steering Committees of two National Competition Policy Reviews of
pharmacy regulation.
Rollo then left
the public service and devoted his time to the emerging pharmacy
project with the Tiwi Health Board. This involved steering a path
towards a HIC Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Approval Number for
a pharmacy business which was not owned by an individual pharmacist.
The work with
the Tiwi people has given Rollo the opportunity to put into action
all the experience he has gained during his career and at the "coalface"
developing a pharmacy service from the "ground up".
He would like
to pass this on to others involved in remote health through Mirrijini
Pty Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tiwi Health Board.
The company was established to market the model of pharmacy practice
developed on the Tiwi Islands. It will also provide a consultancy
advice to others wanting to tread the same path of owning a pharmacy
within their service.
Rollo has developed
strong views over the past two years on the future direction for
health services to Indigenous Australians and is firmly committed
to addressing the social determinants of ill health. He has presented
on this subject at recent conferences.
Within the
Tiwi pharmacy model there is attention to:
- Health promotion;
- Training
and education of indigenous health workers and pharmacy technicians;
- All aspects
of policy surrounding pharmaceutical use in health care;
- Development
of IT services to pharmacy practice.
And more
specifically:
- Client's
understanding of disease;
- Role of a
pharmacists in achieving compliance in its broadest sense;
- Dispensing/inventory
control software package;
- Use of Websterpak
as a dose administration aid;
- Maximizing
the potential for pharmacy/doctor Home Medication Reviews
