Pharmacy Graduate

After qualifying for a degree in pharmacy in Australia there is a requirement to complete pre-registration training. South Australia requires successful completion of the Post-graduate Experiential Learning (PEL) program, and there are similar programs in other jurisdictions.

Pre-Registrant Training Information
The program is for a minimum period of 52 weeks and is usually undertaken in a community pharmacy or in a hospital pharmacy department. The SA Pharmacy Boatrd has agreed to half of the required time to be spent in am Aboriginal community controlled pharmacy setting. The period is subject to a formal agreement approved by the Board.

All pre-registrant training sites require Board approval before being able to offer training.
On two occasions, during the 52 weeks the PEL program supervisor will visit each pre-registrant training site on behalf of the Board. The purpose of such visits is to interact with both pre-registrant and preceptor (supervisor) within the confines of the actual site.

There are a number of requirements of the PEL program that must be completed successfully by pre-registrants in order to register.

These requirements of the PEL program include;

  • Assignments and a project

  • Seminar days

  • A current First Aid Certificate

  • Regular evaluation and assessment, throughout the length of the program that determines the pre-registrant's progress, development and performance. This is carried out by the preceptor (supervisor) and the Board

  • A final assessment; comprising a number of "stations" where a problem is presented and oral answers are provided and during the same day an extensive structured interview. The assessment process throughout the year allows the Pharmacy Board of South Australia to register pre-registrants with the appropriate support of data confirming competency to practice pharmacy.

During pre-registrant training a graduate pharmacist is paid a salary of approximately 60% of the base Pharmacist Award rate but the final agreement is between the pre-registrant and the preceptor.
